What is the difference between Broadband, Fiber and 3G?

As an Internet company, people often ask what the difference is between the different Internet services we provide, and also what else is available in Ghana. At Teledata, we sell both broadband internet services, as well as fiber. Other companies in Ghana offer 3G and 4G services. What you use the internet for, how often, and how much you want to spend on it, will determine what kind of internet service is best for you.

Broadband internet

Broadband internet is also known as the high-speed Internet. It is a lot faster than 3G and 4G internet, and way quicker than the old dial-up internet connections. Broadband is standard through the world, and fast enough to let users use things like Skype and YouTube. DSL broadband is delivered over copper phone wires. As Techessentials explains, the lines are split into two frequencies: one for data and one for voice. Traditional DSL speeds range from 768 Kbps to as fast as 7 Mbps–but must be located within two miles of the phone company’s central office for optimal speed.

With cable broadband, the Internet is delivered over the same cables used to provide television data. Basic cable internet speeds range from 6 Mbps to 18 Mbps, while more advanced cable internet can reach speeds of 75 Mbps and even higher. However, Cable Internet speeds can be affected by users within the same vicinity using the same cable connection. The more people, the slower the rate.

At Teledata, our broadband packages range, depending on if it is for the home or business. Our home package has download and upload speed of up to 10Mbps.  Our business packages can go up to speeds of 155Mbps. See here for more details on those.

With no data cap on our broadband packages, you are free to download and upload as much as you want!

Fiber Internet

Fiber optic broadband uses fiber optic cables to send data. This technology means the internet service is very, very fast, reliable and secure.

It is a lot faster than cable or wireless internet. With our Fiber To The Home (FTTH) service here in Ghana,  you can download as many HD videos as you want to. You can stream your favorite albums and upload and download high res photos from your favorite social media websites instantly.

Whatever you do with broadband, you can do with fiber, but so much faster. You can stream and download through fiber at much faster speeds than your broadband connection. With our Teledata services,  you don’t need to worry about a data cap.

3G and 4G

These technologies are usually from cell phone companies in Ghana, and the internet they provide is for mobile phones and 3G or 4G devices. Different providers offer these services. The G stands for generation. 4G in Ghana is the most current generation of cell phone network coverage and speeds. 3G technology created the first systems fast enough to make smartphones practical. 4G is much faster than 3G, though of course, not as fast as fiber.
